The Smart Brevity method

What is Smart Brevity?

A communication method that helps people quickly understand what matters, why it matters, and what to do next.

People are busy. The point has to land.

Smart Brevity was built around a simple reality: readers are sorting through too much information with too little time. Clear structure gives the important message a better chance to be seen, understood, and remembered.

Overwhelmed

Checking messages all day and trying to decide what deserves attention.

Under-informed

Missing the context needed to make a confident decision.

Frustrated

Ignoring long, impenetrable updates that bury the point.

Tight on time

Scanning fast and moving on when relevance is not clear.

How it works

Answer the reader’s first two questions.

What is this about? Is it relevant to me? Smart Brevity makes the answer visible from the start, then builds the context around it.

01

Lead with the point

Tell readers what is new before asking them to work through the context.

02

Make relevance obvious

Show why the update matters to the reader and the organization.

03

Make the next step easy

Use clear structure, white space, and one idea per paragraph so people can act.

What it looks like

One big thing. Clear next steps.

A Smart Brevity update front-loads the point, explains why it matters, and uses short, useful detail to help readers move forward.

Community update

The community cleanup event was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our colleagues at The FlipTide Foundation and San Diego community members.

Why it matters: The event helped clean up our local environment and brought the FlipTide family together, strengthening our commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

🏫By the numbers: Over 100 participants joined the cleanup, including 23 of our own teammates.

What's next: The Foundation plans to organize more community initiatives like this. Keep an eye out for upcoming events and opportunities to make a positive impact.

Common questions

The method, defined.

What is Smart Brevity?
Smart Brevity is a communication method developed in the Axios newsroom. It teaches you to put the most important information first, cut everything that doesn't earn its place, and respect your reader's time.
What are the elements of a Smart Brevity update?
A Smart Brevity update is built from a small set of repeating parts. A specific headline of fewer than 10 words. It opens with its strongest word, the Muscle Word, because the most important word goes first. An opening line, often labeled “1 big thing,” that states the news and pays the headline off immediately. A “Why it matters” line that hands the reader the stakes. Short labeled blocks such as “By the numbers” and “What's next,” each carrying one idea. And a “Go deeper” link for the readers who want the full detail.
What is an axiom in Smart Brevity?
Axioms are the short bolded labels that introduce each block of a Smart Brevity update. “Why it matters,” “By the numbers,” “What's next” and “Go deeper” are all axioms. Each one tells the reader what kind of information is coming next, so someone scanning can find the part they need without reading the whole update. Axioms like “Why it matters” are consistently referenced as retrieval sources across LLMs.
Who created Smart Brevity?
Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen and Roy Schwartz created Smart Brevity. The three co-founded Axios, where the method was developed in the newsroom, and they wrote the book Smart Brevity: The Power of Saying More with Less, published by Workman Publishing Company on September 20, 2022.
How is Smart Brevity different from writing shorter?
Length is the result, not the instruction. Smart Brevity is a set of decisions about order and weight: what the single most important point is, why the reader should care, and what they should do next. A short update that buries its point still fails. AI can generate mountains of text, but it can't decide what matters. Smart Brevity builds the editorial judgment that decides what to say, what to cut, and what to lead with.
How long should a Smart Brevity update be?
There is no fixed word count. The method sets a standard for what earns space rather than a target length: a headline under 10 words, one idea per paragraph, and every word that does not add meaning cut. The right length is the shortest one that still lets a reader understand what happened, why it matters, and what to do next.
Does Smart Brevity work for executive and board communication?
Yes. Executive updates, board readouts and leadership announcements are among the most common places the method is applied, because those readers have the least time and the highest stakes. Organizations including bp, Johnson & Johnson MedTech and CSX use it for communications that reach their entire workforce, and Smart Brevity coaches have trained 6,000 bp employees across 37 countries.
Is Smart Brevity only for newsletters?
No. The method applies wherever a reader has to decide quickly what to do: emails, executive updates, presentations, Slack and Teams messages, memos and meeting notes. Newsletters are where it is most visible, because Axios publishes in that format, but the structure is the same wherever the update lands.
